About

Essentially Nederland is a small independent publisher of city titles in the Netherlands. It is owned and run by PND Media.

Why it exists

A Dutch newspaper newsroom

Finding out what is happening in a Dutch city, in English, is harder than it should be. The information is scattered across venue sites, municipal pages, listing aggregators and social media, much of it out of date, a good deal of it promotional. Newcomers give up and long-term residents miss things happening on their own street.

Our answer is unglamorous: gather it properly, check it, and hand it over in one plain daily email, with a calendar and a directory behind it. No paywall, no clickbait, no sponsored articles dressed as reporting.

How the titles are built

Every title runs on the same publishing system. It collects from well over a hundred local sources a day, reads the pages behind the listings rather than trusting the summaries, removes duplicates, checks that an event is really happening on the day claimed, and puts what survives in front of an editor. Nothing reaches a reader without a person deciding it should.

That shared foundation is deliberate. It means a new city launches with a full calendar and a working directory from the start, instead of a thin page that fills up over a year.

Who runs it

Essentially Nederland is published by PND Media, registered in Amsterdam. The editorial work is led by Douglas Heingartner, an Amsterdam-based journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Economist, Wired, the BBC, New Scientist and Quartz, and who spent two years as a media affairs specialist at the United States Department of State in The Hague.

Where we are going

Amsterdam and The Hague are live. Rotterdam and Eindhoven are in preparation. The intention is a national group of city titles that a resident of any Dutch city can rely on, each one genuinely local and none of them a rewrite of the others.
